Maoist militants in the Indian province of Chhattisgarh ambushed and killed at least seven policemen Friday in the central Indian state.
Police said the attack occurred in the Kuakonda area of the Shamgiri Hills in the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh.
A group of ten policemen were in transit on motorcycles to provide security for workers building a road when militants detonated land mines and ambushed them with automatic rifles.
Two policemen were wounded in the attack, senior police officer Mukesh Gupta told BBC.
"The Maoists walked away with AK-47s of the dead policemen," Dantewada's superintendent of police Narendra Khare told IANS.
Chhattisgarh is a stronghold for Maoist rebels who claim they are fighting for the rights of the poor.
