LEAD IN
The construction of a major highway around the city of Rio de Janeiro has been partly stopped due to the discovery of a small frog under threat of extinction.
The Brazilian Government has already invested millions in the Metropolitan Arc, which will detour heavy lorry traffic from the North to Sepetiba harbour.
But all has been halted until the survival of the frogs, only found in a small part of the forest reserve, is guaranteed.
STORYLINE
This little frog is one of the many residents of the Mario Xavier National Forest.
The site was originally conceived as a government Eucalyptus tree plantation and research station.
After this line of research moved into private hands, the 493 hectare forest lost its purpose and started to grow back its original vegetation.
