Steps for Chip Carving a Small Recipe Box
Step 1
Set the Stencil Mark a center point on your box with a horizontal and vertical line on your box. Take the stencil and line it properly with the center and adhere it.
Step 2
Mark Your Cuts Use a felt tip marker to designate areas on your pattern where you want to cut.
Step 3
Make Your Cuts Take the knife so the blade is in front of your thumb. Cutting towards yourself, insert a vertical cut into the wood. As you push the blade, lay the knife underneath your chip. Cut both sides of the chip and lift the loosened chip from the cut with the broadside of the blade. Practice cutting on a scrap piece of wood to become more comfortable before advancing to your larger piece of work.
Step 4
Remove the Stencil Take a blow dryer and warm the top of the stencil so it begins to separate from your work. Use a fine wire brush to remove it completely.
Step 5
Erase Your Marks Use a piece of fine grit finishing sandpaper to erase any pencil marks on the wood.
Step 6
Stain the Box Use any kind of finish you desire on your recipe box to complete your new Old World family heirloom.
