Beginning a painting can feel a bit overwhelming at first, so I wanted to share a lesson giving you some EASY steps to simplify your paintings by doing some preliminary studies. Not only are these fun, but they have lots of practical advantages prior to beginning a more serious piece.

STEPS:
* Do a quick value study - In this lesson you will see me do a value study in charcoal for two small studies. This immediately helps you to identify the large shapes and values.
* Keep it Simple - Don't get bogged down with too much detail but focus on the elements that caught your interest to begin with - giving them center stage and focal point interest.
* Do a color study - Whether you decide to use local color (the color that is inherent to the scene) or get creative with a color palette of your own, putting down some color will help to establish what works and what doesn't. When you get it right you will already have your color choices when you begin the final piece.
