WAG9 is a class of 25 kV AC electric locomotive that was developed in 1995 by ABB Group for Indian Railways. The model name stands for broad gauge (W), AC Current (A), Goods traffic (G), 9th generation (9) locomotive. WAG9 started service in 1996. WAG9 locomotives are built by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Patiala Locomotive Works (PLW). WAG9 was the most powerful Freight locomotive until the arrival of WAG12.
The WAP7 locomotive is the passenger variant of WAG9.
