When measuring my heart rate during a rotax rental karting race, I measured some staggering BPMs!!!
Even when racing at physically intensive tracks like Barcelona, the highest heart rate I've measured in a Formula 3 car is around 180. While these karts are quick enough to make you a little sore the next day, they are no where near the physicality of a high downforce race car, so why the high heart rate?
Well my theory comes down to cognitive load and adrenaline. At the time of recording this, I was spending a lot more time behind the wheel of F3 cars than karts, and I was very comfortable and measured when behind the wheel. Karting without mirrors was something I hadn't done in a while and so my concentration level was to the absolute max since I was actively learning while driving. Couple that with a big dose of adrenaline, and the heart rate was soaring.
It's also possible that the device was inaccurate, but you can see more about that in the full video on my YT channel!
