Garhi Padhavali that means padhavali ka kila is primarily a small fortress which was built around first half of 18th century by the Jaat rulers of Gohad and Dholpur.
Located 35 km north of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh and very close to the impressive Bateshwar Temple Complex, Garhi Padhavali is a 10th century Shiva temple that holds a bit of a surprise for anyone who decides to visit this monument.

This temple which was dedicated to lord shiva was built by kacchapaghat dynasty around 10th century AD, which was contemporary to the khajuraho group of temples. Kacchapaghat dynasty is also known to have built the Ekattarso Mahadev Temple or 64 Yogini Temple of Mitaoli along with the Kakanmath Temple and Sas Bahu or Sahastra Bahu Temple in Gwalior.
The interior of this temple is so profusely decorated that you would hardly see any plain bit of stone on any of the architectural elements ,be it the pillars, beams, ceiling and even architraves they are all completely covered with iconography.
The panoramic iconography of gods and goddesses just goes on, and you would rarely see such intricate carvings inside any temple in India and this is definitely comparable to the temples at Osian in Jodhpur Rajasthan but the density and details are far more visible here in Padhavali.
North Panel (south-facing) – Lord Brahama , Shiva and Vishnu in old age, with lower section depicting celebration at Nandgaon of the birth of Lord Krishna.
East Panel (west-facing) – Chamunda, with lower section depicting Lord Ram and his army of Vanaras performing a puja by a Shiva lingam before the war with Ravana.
South Panel (north-facing) – Lord Shiva with Parvati and Nandi, lower section depicting war scene of Mahabharata killing Abhimanyu.
West Panel (east-facing) – Lord Surya, with lower section depicting Lords Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu.
Though the temple ruins at Padhavali are contemporary to those of Khajuraho group of temples, the difference lies in the fact that the intricate carvings have been made inside the Padhavali temple complex whereas in Khajuraho all the artistic attentions have been applied to the outside of the temple complex, and to have a subtle visual experience your are forced to enter into the Padhavali temple ruins.
