The AK Party was cruising to victory, even as the ballots were still being counted. And the final results showed that it collected nearly 50 percent of the votes, to equal its success in the 2011 elections. Earlier polls had suggested the AKP would improve its votes by only a couple of points. But the nearly nine percent rise surprised almost everyone.
AK Party given mandate
That rise allowed the AKP to increase the 258 seats it won in the June elections, to 317. And that gives it the mandate to form a single government. The AKP also extended its representation to 78 out of 81 provinces in Turkey and obtained 14 more seats in the country’s east and southeast. With the win guaranteed, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu arrived at the party headquarters in the capital Ankara. There, he gave the balcony speech, which has become an AKP trademark after each election. Davutoglu also took time to reflect on the results of the last elections, which resulted in a deadlock.
Opposition dealt a blow
One party’s gains were other parties’ losses. On the road to victory, the AK Party took 18 seats from the HDP and four from the CHP. But it was the MHP which suffered the heaviest. In total, it lost 40 seats across 39 electoral districts. That’s almost half the seats it won in the previous elections. And the AKP grabbed 37 of those, while the CHP three. The votes of the HDP also dropped by 21 percent, bringing its seats down from 80 to 59. Again, 18 of those seats went to the AKP, and three to the CHP. The CHP was able to increase its number of seats from t he last elections – but only by two. It lost four seats to the AK Party, but was able to gain three seats each from the MHP and the HDP. But the shift of seats has also resulted in a decline in female representation in the parliament. It’s down from 95 in the previous elections to 81. Less than a week after its sweeping victory at the ballot, the AKP has already suggested what may be next for Turkey. It’s post-election statements that the new government will now focus on.
