In an advisory opinion issued on Friday, the United Nations High Court ruled that Israeli settlements in Palestinian areas are illegel under international law.
The rulings of judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), also known as the World Court, are not legally biding but do bear weight under international law.
"Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, and the regime associated with them, have been established and are being maintained in violation of international law."

The court also stated that Israel's continued presence in the Palestinian territories was illegal and should end "as rapidly as possible."
It further stated that Israel must make restitution for the losses caused by its 'occupation' of the Palestinian territories.
The dispute arises from a 2022 request from the UN General Assembly, which predates the present Israel-Hamas war.
The UN Assembly requested that the court consider the legal implications of Israel's "prolonged occupation, settlement, and annexation" of Palestinian lands, including east Jerusalem, as well as related Israeli government policies.
In February, more than 50 states presented their views to the court, with Palestinian delegates requesting that Israel withdraw from all occupied territories and remove unlawful settlements.
Israel did not attend the hearings, but submitted a written statement to the court stating that providing an advisory opionion would be "harmful" to efforts to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The majority of participating states wanted the court to declare the occupation illegal, but a few, like Canada and Britain, argued that it should refuse to issue an advisory opinion.
The United States, Israel's strongest supporter, urged the court to limit any advisory opinion and not order the unconditional withdrawal of Israeli forces from Palestinian territories.
In 2004, the ICJ issued an advisory opinion stating that an Israeli separation barrier surrounding the majority of the West Bank was "contrary to international law" and that Israeli settlements had been constructed in violation of international law.
Israel dismissed that ruling.
