Mandela, Castro arrive; ovation for exiled Nasri
Delegates to the United Nations social summit on Friday (10/3)
finally agreed on a plan to end worldwide poverty and social
injustice but warned that results would not come quickly or
easily. The first of the heads of state and government also began
arriving on Friday. South African President Nelson Mandela and
Cuba's Fidel Castro expressed cautious hope despite the likelihood
of the summit adopting no firm programme to ease world poverty.
"I expect that the summit will go into the problems of hunger and
poverty," Mandela said upon arrival. "All are issues undermining
the effort of making human life better." Castro arrived a few
hours later, wearing his trademark army fatigues and cap. Asked
what he expected from the meeting, the Cuban leader said: "Let's
wait." Castro and Mandela were among 120 leaders planning to
attend the closing stages of the summit. Also there was exiled
Bangladeshi authoress Taslima Nasri. She reported the case history
of a 17-year-old schoolgirl who received 110 lashes after giving
birth, and who was then forced into marriage -- the latest in a
long list of acts of aggression against women in Bangladesh.
