This animation has been released by ZF, with the announcement of its new I2SM (In-Rotor Inductive-Excited Synchronous Motor) motor technology. I'm no motor expert, but this seems to combine the benefits of an asynchronous induction motor (i.e. low friction), with those of a separately excited synchronous motor (i.e. no permanent magnets). Car makers often have to decide which technology best fits their application (it's often one of each, for 4-wheel drive EVs), so it will be interesting to see how the market reacts to this new technology. This low friction technology could also be a threat to those suppliers who manufacture disconnect clutch devices, for eAxles.
