Scoliosis is a development of an unnatural sideway spinal curve that also rotates into the concavity. The nature of scoliosis is progressive, meaning it's virtually guaranteed to worsen over time. However, we don't know to what extent it will worsen or how fast it will progress. Early diagnosis of scoliosis can lead to early treatment, though there's never a complete guarantee of treatment success. Treating scoliosis early typically yields better results because it prevents the curve from progressing into higher levels and becoming more challenging to treat. Therefore, diagnosing scoliosis early is crucial for effective treatment.
Scoliosis has different severity levels, ranging from mild to very severe, determined by a measurement called a Cobb angle on a scoliosis X-ray. The higher the Cobb angle, the more severe the scoliosis. Early detection and treatment of mild curves usually result in better outcomes. While scoliosis is not curable, it is progressive. Treating or reducing scoliosis involves stopping its progression and reducing the curve's size. This alteration in the curve's progression can change its natural course if left untreated.
There are two main treatment approaches for scoliosis: traditional and conservative. Traditional treatment typically leads to spinal fusion, while conservative treatments aim for curve reduction and spinal function without invasive surgery. Traditional treatment options usually have no strategy for mild scoliosis, often recommending watchful waiting. However, delaying treatment during this phase can miss the opportunity to make a significant impact on a small curve.
Conservative treatment options focus on actively reducing the curve throughout the treatment process. Integration of multiple treatment options aims to deliver a corrective result, addressing the structural alignment of the spine. Chiropractic care, physical therapy, and corrective bracing are utilized to improve spine structure, posture, and muscle balance. These treatments are tailored to each patient and can be continued at home to stabilize and reduce scoliosis.
Despite the effectiveness of conservative treatments, spinal fusion may be recommended for severe cases, sacrificing spinal movement for alignment. However, spinal fusion has lifelong implications for spinal health and function. The decision to perform spinal fusion varies based on the severity of the curve and potential negative effects on spinal health.
Ultimately, the goal of treatment is to achieve the straightest possible spine with optimal function. At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we prioritize conservative chiropractic-centered approaches to prevent progression and reduce spinal curvature while retaining function. By combining customized therapies and rehabilitations, we strive to provide effective treatment for scoliosis patients.
