Boris Johnson has confirmed that Greater Manchester will face Tier 3 restrictions from Friday after talks collapsed over a deal with local leader.
The Prime Minister had personally intervened, speaking twice on the phone to Andy Burnham to try to break the standoff, but the area will now be placed into local lockdown unilaterally.
Speaking earlier, Mr Burnham said the Government "walked away" from negotiations and said that local leaders were not offered enough to protect people through the "punishing" winter ahead.
Pubs and bars will be closed, unless they are serving substantial meals, for a 28-day period, along with betting shops, casinos, bingo halls, adult gaming centres and soft play areas.
