A Tanzanian magistrate has granted a prosecution request to release into police custody one of two suspects charged in the bombing of the U-S Embassy.
During a brief hearing, Chief Resident Magistrate Projest Rugazia granted the prosecution request that Rashid Saleh Hemed be released into the custody of Assistant Police Commissioner Robert Manumba for five days to help with the investigation.
Hemed, a Tanzanian from Zanzibar, and Egyptian Mustafa Mahmoud Said Ahmed were formally charged September 21 in the August 7 bombing of the embassy in which 11 people were killed.
Another 70 were injured.
The two U-S embassy bombing suspects were brought to the Kisutu Resident Magistrate Court in the Tanzanian capital of Dar Es Salaam on Monday for arraignment.
Security was very high as the suspects were led into the courtroom after their arrest in September by F-B-I agents.
Mustafa Mahmoud Said Ahmed holds an Egyptian passport, but an Iraqi, Congolese, and Yemeni one as well.
He was tracked down by the F-B-I after he made two telephone calls the day after the bombings, one to the F-B-I and another to the British High Commission.
The substance of these calls was not revealed, but the F-B-I wanted the chance to interrogate him further.
Mustafa Mahmoud Said Ahmed says he hopes he has a fair trial.
UPSOUND: "....I hope that...........I hope that."
The other suspect is Said Rashid Saleh Hemed, a Tazanian national, but no details of his arrest were available.
They are charged with 11 counts of homicide, but the court appearance was a preliminary inquiry only.
Both suspects claim innocence, and they will have the chance to argue it in the Tanzanian High Court when the case is presented.
