See how to check a used outboard before you buy it in this video from Boats.net.
Outboards can take a lot of wear and tear out on the water. In this video, John will tell you about what you need to look for in a used outboard. From the aesthetic things that might be readily apparent to the hidden things you might not see without doing a little testing.
Here’s your used outboard checklist:
Will it fit?
Any damage?
Check the oil color.
Check the water pump.
Check the cowl gasket.
Check the oil level at the dipstick.
Check the spark plugs.
Do a compression test.
Crank it up for a test run if possible.
Does it include controls? If so, what is their condition?
