US sprinter Noah Lyles loses race after taunting rival at finish line
US sprinter Noah Lyles will advance to the men's 100m final at the 2024 Paris Olympics after finishing second in his semi-final on Sunday afternoon. Lyles, who clocked a final time of 9.83 seconds, was beaten by Jamaican sprinter Oblique Seville by just 0.02 seconds.
But it was the interaction between the two athletes that caught the attention of fans.
Despite finishing second, as both sprinters crossed the finish line, Lyles was seen staring down Sevilla for several seconds.
Lyles may have thought he had passed Sevilla at the end of the race, leading to the taunting, but the final result showed he had not. Lyles and Sevilla will have another shot at each other in the final.
There was a similar situation involving Lyles and Sevilla in a previous race in June. In that case, the Jamaican started staring at Lyles late in the race. Lyles sought revenge in Sunday's race, but he did so in a losing effort.
