What Is A Small Modular Reactor? ❓
You have probably heard the term small modular reactor recently.
It has made the headlines 📰 and attracted some big-name investors of late.
But what is a small modular reactor?
Let's work backwards through the acronym - SMR...
A Reactor is basically a large kettle. it works very much like a coal power plant but uses nuclear fuel to generate heat to generate steam releasing no carbon 🍃 to the environment rather than burning coal which generates lots of CO2.
The Modular design of the reactors allows for much of the manufacture 👷♀️ to be completed in a factory which is much quicker and cheaper than manufacturing on site.
Additionally, the modular designs allow for repeatability and economies of scale 🤑 allowing for further savings in construction costs.
Finally, the small element of the name is pretty self-explanatory. Think of a 1.5-litre bottle of coke versus a 500ml bottle of coke. The smaller bottles allow for lower cost upfront, greater scalability and flexibility when selecting a site.
This is the future we are excited about, this is the future they are excited about and this is the future you should be excited about.
