Action from the final four undefeated players at the Sands Regency Open 19 in Reno Nevada, June 1994. We’ve got two legendary players and a commentator who is just as legendary.
Earl Strickland was already a two time World 9-Ball Champion in 94, and was also a four time Player of the Year and was named Player of the Decade in the 1980’s. He was the reigning US Open 9-Ball Champion, a title he had won three times and would go on to win twice more.
Wiley was making his mark on the pro pool scene and would go on to win a number of titles and accolades in the sport.
On commentary for this one, is “Pretty Boy Floyd” Jim Mataya. Mataya was one of the more colorful members of the pool community, and he certainly had the credentials to back up his commentary. Mayata was a feared competitor in both 9-ball and straight pool, winning many titles going back to the mid 60s. Mataya was joined by “Diamond” Bill Cress, a popular One Pocket player from California.
