Looking to strengthen the muscles that take stress off of your TFCC? Look no further, all you need is a PVC pipe and a resistance band!
The TFCC is a structure of ligaments and cartilage the helps stabilize the ulnar (pinky) side of your wrist. It is loaded when the wrist deviates toward the pinky side (as seen in the video clip). By strengthening the muscles that control wrist deviation to the opposite side (radial deviation) you can balance the loads placed on the wrist while rock climbing and better eccentrically control the wrist moving into ulnar deviation.
Of course you can use a dowel or a weight. But the grip very narrow and it doesn’t simulate the hand and finger position used while climbing. So a 1.5 inch or 2 inch PVC pipe is preferred to open the grip more into an open hand position to optimize the length tension of the muscles that cross the wrist while performing the exercise. If you want to go all out, drill hole at the end of the PVC pipe and thread the resistance band!
