If you saw the video of the top 8 tuna lures, Mike, Ivan Oleg and I went out on a 30 hr tuna trip with Captain Matt and the New Buccaneer (Galveston Party boats) to put the lures to the test. This was an epic trip from the standpoint of lots of tuna hooked, lots of tuna caught and unfortunately, lots of tuna lost! We used 6 of the 8 top lures with these results:
The top 8 lures I recommend:
Striker Tackle Popper- Did not use, fish were not feeding on top
Halco Max 130- multiple blackfin and yellowfin caught
Unnamed jig (similar to a Williamson Herring Jig)- used but no fish caught, was too light (5 oz was too light for the current)
Williamson Benthos Speed Jig- multiple blackfin caught and lost a couple of nice fish (believed to be yellowfin)
Striker Tackle Flatfall- used briefly but no fish caught
Hammered Diamond Jig- Used and caught fish believed to be yellowfin tuna. Lost to shark.
Ocean Tackle International Jaeger Jig- used briefly but no fish caught
2/0 HD Circle Hook for chunking- used multiple times but lines were cut by cuda or sharks
Frenzy (or Yummy) flying fish- did not use, fish were not feeding on top
We started off catching 2 dozen pinfish that we wanted for scamp or AJ. At the first and second stops, beeliner were on fire with AJ, grouper and red snapper mixed in. I used a combination of squid and pinfish and ended up with a few beeliner and multiple tangles. I hooked and lost a nice fish in a tangle and we all ended up with a few vermillion.
3rd stop, I hooked a monster fish. I could not move it with my electric at all and ended up disconnecting from the battery and tag teaming it with Mike and a deckhand. It ended up being the trips largest 70lb AJ.
Tuna fishing was decent all night. Ivan, Mike and I all caught yellows. Ivan and I both lost multiple yellows but Mike managed to land his.
At Auger the topwater bite was on fire with Yellowfin, blackfin, baby yellow and shark all biting. It was an insane halco bite!
