STORYLINE:
Polish farmers used their tractors to block a major highway crossing the border with Germany on Tuesday in an ongoing protest against European Union agricultural policy and duty-free imports from Ukraine.
The demonstration in Swiecko, close to the German city of Frankfurt an der Oder, forced German authorities to divert traffic from the highway before the border, prompting up to 18,000 trucks a day to find alternative routes between Berlin and Warsaw.
Ukrainian farmers have been allowed to import their grain into the EU duty-free since 2022, which Polish farmers believe has caused a drop in prices.
The actions follow similar protests across Europe in recent months, and come as the West is experiencing growing fatigue in helping Ukrainians as they try to push back Russia's invasion.
The swell of protests across the 27-member EU have become a major challenge for leaders, most of whom strongly support Ukraine but are forced to respond to the rising social anger.
