"Let me begin with a statement by the President. I am pleased with the agreements reached today at the Six Party talks in Beijing. These talks represent the best opportunity to use diplomacy to address North Korea's nuclear programs. "Because the disabling of these facilities is a sign that the North Koreas may in fact be ready to make a strategic choice, I will not take it as a complete sign until we've seen that disablement, but obviously disablement is an important step forward."

"With today's agreement hopefully the beginning of the solution to one of the most difficult nuclear disputes international diplomacy has had to deal with in past years has been accomplished. The implementation of the Beijing agreement therefore will not only be a contribution to regional peace and stability, it will also be an important signal for worldwide (nuclear) containment. We hope that the signal this sends will not only be noticed, but also taken up in other capitals."

STORYLINE:
A landmark nuclear agreement reached Tuesday with North Korea was welcomed on Tuesday by the US, Germany - which currently holds the European Union presidency - and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
US President George W. Bush called the agreement "the best opportunity" for diplomacy to succeed in ridding the Pyongyang government of all atomic weapons and capabilities.
In a statement read by his press secretary Tony Snow, the president said he was pleased with the agreements reached today in Beijing.
Under the first phase of the agreement announced in Beijing, North Korea would be required to shut down its main nuclear reactor and allow UN inspectors back into the country within 60 days.
In return, it will receive aid equal to 50,000 tons of heavy fuel oil.
