Fighting in Aleppo displaces 50K
The Red Cross says 50-thousand people have been displaced from Aleppo. The Syrian regime began an offensive there earlier this month, backed by Russian air strikes. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 500 people have been killed in Aleppo, while The Guardian reports Syria’s near-five-year war has killed 470-thousand people. The Syrian Centre for Policy Research says 11 and a half percent of Syrians have been killed or injured since the conflict started.

DOJ sues Ferguson
US Department of Justice has filed a civil rights suit against the city of Ferguson. Attorney General Loretta Lynch says it’s because the city has waited too long to adopt an agreement for greater safety. But Ferguson’s mayor says “It will cost more to implement the agreement than it will be to fight a lawsuit.” The DOJ launched an investigation when a white police officer shot dead unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown.

More than 60 killed by suicide bombs
Two girls have carried out a twin suicide attack for Boko Haram on Tuesday. A military official says it killed more than 60 people at a camp for people displaced by the militant group. Reports of the attack have been delayed because of Boko Haram’s strategy of damaging communication posts. Dikwa camp is about 80 kilometres northeast of the capital of Borno state. Boko Haram has killed thousands of Nigerians and displaced one and a half million others since 2009.

Board member makes ‘colonialist’ remark
Facebook has distanced itself from comments made on Twitter by a board member. The company says “We strongly reject the sentiments expressed by Marc Andreessen last night regarding India.” On Tuesday evening, Andreessen tweeted “Anti-colonialism has been economically catastrophic for the Indian people for decades. Why stop now?” He later deleted it. On Monday, India’s telecom regulator decided not to allow different price plans for different data platforms, forcing Facebook to discontinue its Free Basics mobile service in India.
