Perhaps the spot I’m now most proud of in the workshop is the entryway, gone is the lone bulb, replaced by a restored 1950s Polish streetlight, made after the war in state-run factories.
The underside is etched glass, which creates a soft pool of light in the entrance and the metal housing is polished aluminium, another light from the folks of @skinflintlighting, all of which, and combined with my shiny metal kilns, are making for the space-age studio of my dreams.
Being taken inside is a board of freshly thrown small bowls, the clay soft, and set in the sun for a while so that the rims rapidly turn leather hard. It doesn’t take long, minutes at most, thereafter they’re shouldered inside, flipped over, the thick bases allowed to dry out further, and then they’re trimmed and finished. Their shapes somewhat reminiscent of the lights that now hang from the ceilings in my studio.
In order to peer into the deep foot-wells, I’ve also been using a Hadrill & Horstmann table lamp, which you’ll see towards the end of the video, bent over and shone into the hollow so I can see with certainty what the looped blade is trimming.
