Originating from the Atlas Mountains and the Rif Mountains of Morocco, the Barbary macaque population residing in Gibraltar stands as the sole wild monkey community across the European continent. While numerous Barbary monkey populations in Africa face decline due to hunting and deforestation, the Gibraltar population demonstrates growth. By 2020, approximately 300 individuals spanning five troops inhabit the Upper Rock area within the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, occasionally venturing into the town. Due to their tailless nature, they are also colloquially referred to as Barbary apes or rock apes locally, despite their classification as monkeys (Macaca sylvanus). In Spanish conversations, speakers simply label them as "monos" (English: monkeys), despite English being the predominant language in the region, given its status as a British overseas territory.
