What kind of person can be an overseer or elder? Paul lays down his basic requirements in 1 Timothy 3:1–7. Today, most churches look for successful businessmen to be elders, perhaps because we tend to see the church largely in business terms, but Paul mostly wanted good fathers because he saw the church as God's household.
