The government is set to give a pay rise to over 900,000 public sector workers, including doctors and teachers. Public sector workers will now receive an above-inflation pay rise of up to 3.1%. The Chancellor Rishi Sunak has praised their “vital contribution” during the coronavirus pandemic.
Rishi Sunak’s pay boost will take the average public sector salary to £31,844, which is now more than £2000 more than their private-sector counterparts. Of the jobs receiving the wage boost, teachers come out best with a 3.1% pay rise, followed by doctors and dentists receiving 2.8%, police and prison officers 2.5%, and armed forces and judiciary at 2%. The announcement is the third above-inflation pay rise for the majority of public sector workers who for 7 years had a wage cap of 1% under George Osbourne’s austerity regime.
