The PGA Tour has reportedly denied its members permission to play in next month’s LIV Golf Invitational Series opener, officially putting its competitors on a collision course with the organisation. Golfweek reports that the PGA Tour on Tuesday sent rejection notices to players who had sought permission to play in the Saudi-backed event in London on June 9.
It’s the strongest indication yet that the PGA Tour sees LIV as a rebel competitor and not as an addition “to the golf ecosystem”, as chief Greg Norman describes it. Norman said in an interview with Sky Sports this week that LIV Golf’s ambition is not to “destroy” the PGA Tour, and insisted the tour is “not a breakaway”. But it’s clear the PGA Tour sees things differently by not granting permission to members to play in the opening event, which has a prize fund of $25 million ($A36m). It was believed that the PGA Tour might’ve been willing to play ball initially given a precedent for affording players limited releases for overseas events. But players seeking an exemption have been shot down, thus putting them on the path for a showdown with the PGA Tour. Meanwhile, Pros react to PGA Tour ban on breakaway league. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan made his move on Tuesday, making it official that PGA Tour members are not allowed to compete in the first LIV Golf Invitational Series event in London next month.
