STORYLINE
The Greek government had urged organisers of the first major labor protest of the year to prevent potentially violent groups from blending in with peaceful demonstrators, as tens of thousands, many carrying Communist Party red flags, gathered in Athens for rallies and a march on parliament. They were generally peaceful, but the efforts to keep a lid on clashes around the city weren't entirely successful.
Youths hurled firebombs and rocks at police, who responded by unleashing floods of teargas. Several people were detained and some were hurt, including a policeman whose uniform burned after he was caught by a firebomb.
Greeks who took to the streets are angry about the austerity measures forced on the country after its deb-crippled economy was rescued from bankrupcty by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.
They've endured months of pay and pension reductions, tax hikes and government spending cuts and now they're faced with job changes that'll affect civil servants, truckers, lawyers, pharmacists and others.
Cristos Tsiglas wants a change of course

Across the country in Greece a general strike Wednesday had halted public transportation, leaving buses in their depots and ferries anchored in port, as well leading to the cancellation of more than 100 flights at the capital's international airport.
