STORYLINE
A US-backed MidEast peace initiative stalled on Sunday in a wave of violence with three Palestinian suicide bombings in an 11-hour period.
The deadliest attack came early in the morning, when a suicide bomber blew up a Jerusalem city bus, killing seven passengers.
The bombing came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas had held the first summit between the two sides in nearly three years.
Israel held Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat responsible for the new wave of attacks, charging that he continued to encourage Palestinian militants.
The Abbas government condemned the bombings and said it was serious about putting an end to such violence.
Sunday's bus bombing, the 93rd in 32 months of fighting, went off just before 0600 local time (0300 GMT) at a busy intersection on the outskirts of Jerusalem, at the start of morning rush hour on what in Israel is a regular work day.
The bomber, a 19-year-old from the West Bank city of Hebron, was disguised as an observant Jew with a skullcap and white prayer shawl
Hamas did not issue a formal claim of responsibility, but Bassem Jamil Tarkrouri, a Hamas activist, was identified by relatives as the assailant.
A recent video showing Takrouri as a Hamas activist was released to news agencies in the West Bank.
Hamas has carried out dozens of bombings in recent years to try to derail peace efforts.
One of the victims of the bus bombing was buried late on Sunday.
Hundreds of friends and family gathered in Jerusalem to pay their last respects to Marina Sachivirshvili, 44, who had been sitting in one of the front seats of the number 6 bus.
Sachivirshvil and three other victims were recent immigrants to Israel from the former Soviet Union.
