People were seen walking toward the border between Russia and Georgia in footage circulating on social media days after President Vladimir Putin announced the partial mobilization of military reserve forces in the country.
A marked increase in traffic at a border crossing between Russia’s North Ossetia region and Georgia was confirmed by Russian authorities three days after Putin’s announcement.
In a statement, the Ministry of Internal Affairs in North Ossetia said “a significant accumulation” of about 2,300 passenger vehicles were lined up in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania heading toward the border with Georgia.
In the footage, people carrying luggage can be seen walking from a location north of the town of Chmi in the direction of the border with Georgia. According to Google Maps, the journey from the location is 14 km (8.7 miles) to the border with Georgia.
