Dr Daniel Barr, Principal Research Integrity Advisor | RMIT University
Dr David Blades, Senior Coordinator, Research Integrity and Governance | RMIT University
In this video, we chat with Dr Daniel Barr and Dr David Blades from RMIT University, who share their experience and insights in promoting research integrity within their institution and as representatives in research advisory groups. They explore disruption in the research space and canvass developments in responsible research practices across the Asia Pacific, and globally.
Acknowledging the changing expectations of research output including volume and speed through pre-prints triggered by the Covid-19 health crisis and its impact on the peer review process, Dan and David unpack the dual opportunities and challenges in commercialising research to yield positive social impact. They further recognise acceleration of a longer-term shift in research from rules-based guidelines and documents to principles-based guidelines, requiring greater self-reflection on the part of researchers to demonstrate responsible conduct.
Dan and David also consider how research integrity might facilitate better researcher connections and collaborations by leveraging trust and efficiencies. In the context of research beyond borders, they point to research asymmetries between economies as holding us back from more cross-boundary and cross-cultural projects, and advocate for the use of principles and planning tools as a way to unite research efforts and mitigate risks inherent in multi-authored work.
At the prospect of more regulatory bodies to oversee research integrity, Dan and David warn against excessive policing as a first response, contending that research transparency and harmonisation can be achieved through greater alignment and dialogue between stakeholders. Furthermore, they call for improvements to evaluation and rewards systems to help motivate research best practice.
How will research integrity evolve as we navigate changes in research practice? Watch the video to get Dan and David’s perspective.
