Day 165: August 07
In the Barvinkove-Sloviansk direction, there are a number of great news. It seems like the Russians not only failed to achieve progress and develop their offensive operation towards Sloviansk, but also started to lose progress that they have achieved with such great losses. Over the last several days, more and more settlements around Sloviansk have been recaptured by the Ukrainians and the fights have gradually been moving closer and closer to Izyum. As you remember, the Russians had almost broke through the defense line Dibrivne-Bohorodychne. Over the last two months, they managed to almost fully capture Bohorodychne, they captured Dolyna and Mazanivka, and started to develop their offensive in the forest and even took Dibrivne. However, the Ukrainians have quietly been turning the course of events in their favor. Several weeks ago, the Ukrainians took back the village of Dibrivne. After that they slowly started to push the Russians in the forest from Ivanivka. Today it was confirmed that the Ukrainians took back Mazanivka, and pushed the Russians even further in the forest Sosna. This means that the Russians were forced out of Dolyna. Right now the fights are taking place in Bohorodycnhe, but it seems like the Ukrainians already have almost full control over the settlement, because the fights are reportedly taking place in the western part of the village. It is expected that very soon the Russians will be forced to withdraw to Pasika, which would mean that the Ukrainians have fully restored the initial defense line that managed to hold the Russians for more than 2 months.
In the Soledar direction, heavy fights continue. Today the Russians launched a combat reconnaissance operation near Bilohorivka in order to gather better information regarding Ukrainian defense system, but were identified on the approaches and pushed back. The Russians also do not stop trying to push the Ukrainians out of Yakovlivka, but so far all attempts have been unsuccessful. The Russians have also overestimated their ability to gain ground in Soledar. Around a week ago, a representative of Donetsk People’s Republic claimed that Soledar will be taken in 4 days, however, more than 4 days later, the Russians are still in the same spot, fighting for the factory Knauf. As reported previously, even though the Russians control most of the factory, the Ukrainians are still holding key positions, that do not allow the Russians to get deeper into the town.
In the Bakhmut direction, heavy fights continue. When it comes to the fights inside the town of Bakhmut itself, as expected, the Russian progress here has stalled, because this factory on the outskirts of the town is cut off from the rest of the town by a pond. The Ukrainians have already blown up the bridges, and Russians sources suggest that they will focus more on taking this town from the south, because attacking it from the direction of the factory is virtually impossible. And in the southern part of this region, a lot of intense fights indeed take place. The Russians are attacking Vesela Dolyna, Zaitseve and Kodema. Today it was confirmed that the Russians took the village of Hladosove, which means that the fights will shift to Dacha. So far, Ukrainians in Kodema and Zaitseve are holding their positions. It seems like they were not prepared for such intense attacks, because there was recently a lot of talk about abandoning these positions, but it seems like the Ukrainians want to buy some more time to prepare their next line of defense along the river, which is why, as reported by some sources, both Zaitseve and Kodema have been reinforced today. Russian sources responded to that information by updating their prognosis, and are now expecting the fight here to continue for at least one more week.
In the southeast, the Russians made another move. Today they tried to attack a small village of Krasnohorivka that is located to the north of Avdiivka. Combining this fact together with their recent gains in Pisky, it seems like the Russians decided to start encircling Avdiivka. When it comes to Pisky, today it was confirmed that the Ukrainians are still controlling the western part of this village, and that the Russians right now cannot further develop their offensive operation and move north. When it comes to Krasnohorivka and Marinka, the fights here continue, but there were no detailed updates regarding the current situation.
