Canon have now released the Canon EOS R3 and it’s better than we thought! Well done Canon, well done.

The Canon EOS R3 has some very interesting specs including:
- Stacked sensor
- 30fps burst rate
- 24.1 Megapixel resolution
- Max ISO at 102,400
- Up to 8-stop IS
- Eye control AF (We’ll talk about this a little later)
- Subject tracking
- Vari-Angle flippy tilty screen
- Electronic view finder
- 6k Raw 60p (you sneaky canon you)
- 4k 120p (nice)
- Wifi and Bluetooth.

First up, we all knew this information but it’s combination of the stacked sensor, 30fps burst rate and 24-megapixel resolution makes this camera a beast for sports professionals, journalists, wedding photographers, and well, anything photography really. It has the ability to process a crazy amount of information due to how they have created the stacked sensor.

With the ISO up to 102,400 and 8-stop IS, it’s gonna be able to shoot in low, low and I mean LOW lighting situations. That’s also a nice feature to have. Low light capabilities are so good these days. This obviously isn’t just on the R3, it’s almost every new camera out there. But the Canon EOS R3 does a good job here.

But I’m a filmmaker, so I wanna talk about video. All the info about this camera was that it would only have 4K video capabilities and I just kept on thinking that if this was to be true, this camera just won’t be that good for filmmakers. 24MP photos and max 4K video… that’s ok I guess but it’s not enough in this day and age and it’s certainly not future proof. But then they come out swinging with 6K RAW 60 fps and 4K 120 fps. In my opinion, that is a really nice balanced point for this camera. That satisfies my filmmakers needs for sure. 6K RAW 12-bit means that you have a good amount of info for the edit and 4K 120fps 10-bit is really good for that slow mo which is required is so many B-Roll situations. And also, it has max duration of 6 hours recording and no 4GB file limit is also very nice. I guess this feature, for sports professionals is good. You never know when that will come in handy.

Also, this camera is robust! I mean I’ve already seen Youtubers like Peter McKinnon crash this camera with a drone and it survived. The lens was a wreck but the camera looks to be completely intact. That’s impressive in my eyes. It’s certainly built to last.

And the Eye AF control has my interest. The worst situation, we as filmmakers, can find ourselves is snapping that photo and finding in post-production that it’s blurry and out of focus. The auto focus on this looks to be insane. First there is the subject tracking so it can recognize the subject that needs to be photographed such as the model, the bird, the vehicle. It’s got a pretty impressive list of subject tracking but the Eye AF system is really cool. When you look through the view finder, the sensors can track your eyes and see where you are looking and will pull focus to that subject. I think that’s a great feature for snapping that shots that are quick. At the end of the days your eye is way quicker that your hands. I like this feature.

Overall, this camera finally makes me look at canon again as a viable camera for the future of filmmaking. We all knew that they would come back against Sony but with the Canon EOS R5, Canon EOS R6 and now the Canon EOS R3, I think they have really pushed back hard and I like the direction that Canon are going. The Canon R3 is honestly a great camera from everything that I have seen so far.

And would I buy this camera for myself? No…. and here is why. This camera is designed for photography first and video second. For high burst speeds first and resolution second. And that’s just not who I am as a filmmaker. If I was a wedding photographer then this camera would be a perfect fit for sure. Never miss a moment with this beast. But I’m a product photographer and commercials filmmaker. I’m more of a controlled studio and location filmmaker. I have no need for 30fps and would prefer to shoot 8K video.
