The weight of the SandTronix Roughness remover was squashing our random orbital palm sander. I needed to add rollers so the machine wouldn't burn out the sander, but still left a fine quality surface. Pivoting rollers can be adjusted to lift weight off the sanding head. I precisely tuned them by setting the machine on a flat beam, and tightening the rollers when they just touch the flat beam.

About the Sanding Robot:

This sanding sled that literally doubles the productivity of one person while sanding wood. Over this summer, I built this device out of plywood. It uses gears, shifters and steel rollers to propel a 5" random orbital palm sander across any timber. I would use this to sand while oiling or using another sander on an adjacent wooden beam. I spent many days at the end of the summer perfecting the process of operation. A height adjustable table accepts the device from the beam once it's done sanding, a rolling cart helps position the sled to roll onto the next timber.

When someone obtains lumber from the mill, it usually has rough-sawn edges that need to be planed. And if it has been planed, it needs to be sanded (which my device can do). In preparing large dimensional lumber for use in construction, sanding is a time-consuming process that doesn't get faster with skill level. Why not use a device with rollers to guide the sander along the beam, hands-free? Depending on the beam size, the operator can have up to 6 minutes to do extra work before transferring the sander to the next beam. Sanding in tandem with this device can make someone 1.5-2 times faster at sanding than sanding without it.

This device is now truly useful, as it allows the operator to do something else while the device sands at a steady rate. If the beam is 24 feet long, they have 6 minutes before needing to interfere, if the timber is 10-14' long, they have about 3 minutes.
