When it comes to putting together your sleep system, you will have a decision to make between two main systems; sleeping bag or quilt.

Everyone knows what a sleeping bag is but a quilt may be more of a mystery to some; a sleeping bag is a bag full of insulation which arounds you on all sides. It offers zippered access either on the top or on one of the sides and can includes a hood. Not all sleeping bags do though.

A quilt is much more minimal; it’s a bag which only offers three areas of insulation; top and sides. They do not have zippers nor a bottom and will require for your sleeping pad to do all of the work with keeping you warm. Additionally quilts don’t have a hood and are in many ways like a blanket which lays on top of you.
