The future of freshwater fishing isn't set in stone nor is it one person, the past has lead us to this point and its up to all of us to protect it and leave it in a better state than we found it. Unfortunately only a generation ago we wiped out the endemic population of cod that would have been closely related to the Mary river cod that we now have re-stocked our catchment with. Each year we need fresh brood stock to add to the gene pool and enhance the diversity of the next years fingerlings that will be released across the catchment. We need special permission to target and remove these protected cod from the waterway and do so working closely with all those involved to look after all these fish with the utmost of care and respect, remember to do the same if your ever lucky enough to cross paths with one of these gorgeous fish.
