The procedure of IVF is divided into 3 stages. The first is the counseling. The patient and the husband, or the couple has to be counseled, prepared mentally and physically or the procedure after that comes the stage of ovarian stimulation. This is followed by egg pick up or transvaginal oocyte retrieval and then embryo transfer. So this ovarian stimulation involves medicines. There are hormonal injections called as gonnadotropins antagonists or agonists are given daily and this lasts for 10 to 1 days. Subsequently once the number and the size of the egg is reached, the size of the egg is about 18 mm in size. A trigger injection is give and under anesthesia or under ultrasound guidance, the egg pickup or oocyte retrieval is done. It oocyte is then incubated in the lab which involves the procedure of IVF or ICSI. IVF stands for invitro fertilization and ICSI for intracytoplasmic sperm injection. Once this is done, the embryo is formed and subsequently the embryo grows for a few days in the laboratory. That is it may upto 2 days or 3 days or 5 days. One of these days, that is day 2 or day 3 or day 5 embryo is transferred back into the womb of the patient, so this is the whole procedures of IVF and at the end of 15 days of embryo transfer we do blood tests to see whether the lady has got pregnant.
