During his third and final State of the State address in his first term, Gov. Phil Murphy ran through a highlight reel of his administration’s accomplishments.
The state of the pandemic in New Jersey is signaling the urgency to get residents vaccinated. There were few specifics for the administration’s future COVID-19 recovery plans in the State of the State address. Instead Murphy chose to highlight current vaccination progress as more than 230,000 doses have been doled out across New Jersey. That including more than 21,000 second-round doses.
But the vaccine rollout continues to lag. The federal government is calling on all states to begin immunizing all adults 65 and older, as well adults with comorbidities. The Trump administration is now planning to release all available vaccines and no longer holding back second doses to ensure steady supply.
Cases continue to rise following the holidays. The state logged another 4,219 positive tests Tuesday, pushing the total to 537,115. An additional 108 fatalities were reported. The total number of deaths in the state is now 20,039.
