How to Practice Time By Yourself! 🙋🏻♀️
I practice what I teach! This question came up in a masterclass I did yesterday for @montereyjazzfestival with “non-bassists” from @skylartang_ …keep a lookout for her 🌟💪
How do I practice having good time when I play myself❓
TRY THIS!
➡️WHAT
- Record yourself taking an unaccompanied solo over a song you’re very familiar with. Just YOU…no metronome, no tracks, no nothing!
- Then, try to accompany that solo track and record it! If you’re a bassist, walk over it. Piano/drums, comp. Horns/voice, play the roots using 1/2 notes
➡️WHY
- You are going to get a 1st hand look into YOUR beat, time, groove, feel etc.
- Listen back and find out what YOUR tendencies are and WHY: do you always rush 1/8th note lines, beat 3 always late, is it your technique? etc.
- Now you know why, so start fixing it from there!
👉Time/Feel is subjective…it feels different to everyone. BUT…don’t let that be an excuse to have bad time! You dig? 👊💯👊
🌟 I always feel like I push, but people say it’s laid back, or right down the middle…it doesn’t matter as long as it feels GOOD! 🌟
