An Arabian horse has given birth to healthy twins, the first such delivery in Egypt and perhaps the world.
The last time an Arabian conceived twins in Egypt was in 1964 when the mother aborted them after five months.
The male foals born to Royally have survived over 50 days now and are considered a major event by for everyone at El Zaharaa stud in Cairo.
In the rare case of twin foals being born anywhere in the world, one usually dies within days.
Although the birth of the twin foals was a happy surprise for everyone at the farm, which has some 400 thoroughbred Arabian horses, the director Dr. Khalil Soliman did not announce it at once, preferring to postpone it to make sure the foals are in good health.
SOUNDBITE(English)
"It is the first time to have twins from pure Arabian horses. The mare gave birth is about 19 years old and the sire is about 17 years old and during the last 100 years it doesn't happen here in Egypt and I think also it doesn't happen anywhere in the world."

The mother's 19 years are equivalent to a 76-year-old human being.
But Rolla never had a problem in conceiving and had already borne 12 foals - all fillies.
The twin foals were isolated for about two weeks to protect them from colds and respiratory diseases.
Their mother was also given a special feeding program in order to be able to breast feed the foals.
