Israeli darts-shell kills sisters
The Israeli Army ordered some northern residents into bomb
shelters on Sunday (9/7) as Hezbollah retaliatory shelling set a
field on fire at Kiryat Shmona. The Islamic guerrilla group's
attack came after an Israeli shell killed two Arab sisters and
wounded five others, including three children, when it landed on a
house in the market town of Nabatiyeh in South Lebanon late on
Saturday. The shell was packed with metal darts. It exploded in
the house of Ali Mohammed Bedair, killing his two daughters Jihan,
19, and 12-year-old Sylvana. Three children aged three to 16 and
two other people were wounded in the attack. Doctors said the
three-year-old has severe brain damage from about 20 dart wounds.
The shells were fired from the Israeli fortified post of Ali Taher
on a hilltop above the town. The post is held by Israeli troops
occupying a south Lebanon border strip. The United Nations
peacekeeping force in south Lebanon, UNIFIL, has protested several
times to Israel about these shells, which scatter hundreds of
nail-sized darts. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin reportedly
criticised the army for the attack, saying it was unnecessary,
when he addressed the Cabinet on Sunday. It was not clear what
provoked the Israeli bombardment. But in recent weeks, Hezbollah
guerrillas have intensified attacks on the Israelis and their
militia allies in the occupied border enclave. The Nabatiyeh
casualties raised this year's toll in south Lebanon, the last
active warfront in the Arab-Israeli conflict, to 103 killed and
244 wounded.
