Power steering fluid change in an Audi A6 is a routine maintenance task that helps ensure smooth operation of the power steering system.
Tools and Materials I have used:
- New power steering fluid, I got 2L FEBI BILSTEIN 06161, synthetic (even though fluid reservoir say 'mineral only'), I used around 1,5L
- T25 torx
- Pilers for squeezing fuel lines.
- 2L empty plastic bottle for old fluid, a jar or similar
- Something to close return hose connection in the reservoir
- Funnel
- Rags or paper towels
- Optional: break cleaner for flushing the fluid reservoir
- Optional: Safety gloves and glasses
Steps:
1. Open the reservoir and use the turkey baster or syringe to remove as much of the old power steering fluid from the reservoir as possible to help minimize the mess.
2. Detach the reservoir with T25.
3. Using pilers detach the return hose (smaller diameter) from the reservoir, fluid will start draining.
4. Put the end of the return hose in the 2L empty bottle, drain old fluid from reservoir to a jar
Optional: To wash the reservoir detach the other hose and use break cleaner to flush dirt out then attach the big hose back.
5. Using funnel add new power steering fluid to reservoir
6. With key in and engine off, start turning steering wheel to max right and left positions, don't let the reservoir go empty.
7. Keep adding new fluid to reservoir and turn the steering wheel until the fluid coming out of return line appears clean.
8. The reservoir cover has a measure scale - the lower mark is for cold fluid (20 deg C) upper is for hot fluid, add or remove the fluid if needed.
9. Close the reservoir.
10. Turn the engine on and check if power steering works OK, should be easy to turn the wheel with a finger, check for leaks again.
11. Check fluid level and check for leaks.
Enjoy your power steering!
