A compilation of the best scuba dive sites that the beautiful Greek island of Rhodes in the Mediterranean has to offer. Conditions were absolutely perfect when I went in August 2020, with 30 meters and more visibility in some spots, little to no current and pleasant temperatures both in the water and on the surface.
Dive sites in order as they appear in the video:
Makri Island Marine Park, often also referred to as "Blutopia". Home to dolphins, tuna and several fish farms, with a maximum depth of ~35m, depending on how deep the tuna and dolphins make you go to spot them.
Kleovoulos cave, just off Lindos, with a stunning topography and some beautiful openings shining light into some of the cave spaces, dipping them in a beautiful deep blue. Maximum depth reached at the last exit at a depth of ~35m.
Pentanisos cave, off the coast between Lindos and Pefkos. Here we encountered lots of shrimp on the cave floor, some old sunken pottery perfectly illuminated but a crack in the cave ceiling, some very interesting species of nudibranches and of course the odd lionfish that has begun infesting the southeastern Mediterranean sea.
Plimiri wreck in the deep southeast of Rhodes. Built in the Netherlands, the vessel was named Giannoula K and went through several owners before sinking in 1981 after bad weather in Plimiri bay. 110 meters long, lying at a maximum depth of 22m with fantastic conditions, it is still mostly intact and is a truly fabulous wreck dive. We skimmed the corridors of this old cargo ship, explored the outside and the main bridge, penetrated the wreck in several spots including the engine room and encountered lots of wildlife including nudibranches, starfish and lionfish on the wreck as well as grouper and smaller schooling species at the bottom. An excellent dive!
Thanks to the good people at Waterhoppers Dive Center for taking me!
