"We think that the sentiment expressed in yesterday's attempted coup d'état is shared by a lot of the people here in the Philippines and today we are seeing a lot of peoples organisations here, calling on Mrs Arroyo to resign and defence secretary Angelo Reyes to resign. As long as Arroyo is in power we think that the problems raised by the junior officer and by these peoples organisations will continue to fester and they will not find any solution under this administration."

STORYLINE:
Thousands of anti-government demonstrators gathered in Manila on Monday as President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was due to hold her annual state of the nation speech.
The left-wing protesters called for Arroyo's resignation, citing her failure to give land to farmers, control corruption and ease crushing poverty.
The protesters burnt a 12-foot effigy of the president which had moving legs symbolising the president on the run.
About three-thousand police officers and sharpshooters were deployed outside the Congress building, where Arroyo was to make her address.
The protest followed a mutiny on Sunday by nearly 300 soldiers who seized a shopping and apartment complex in Manila demanding the presidents resignation.
