Blood in a stool is a common problem. Usually most common problem is piles. Second most common reason is fissures. Third problem is the ulcers in the rectum and the colon, what we call as ulcerative colitis. How we say that blood in stool is ulcerative colitis? If somebody is passing 3 – 4 times day stools with blood, mucus and pus, then that is called as ulcerative colitis. Usually they have a crampy pain, they go to the bathroom and pass little bit of stools with mucus. That is called as ulcerative colitis. Don’t always think that blood in stools is piles. Blood in stools can be piles, fissures, ulcerative colitis and in old age, it can even be cancers. So how do we manage this ulcerative colitis? Management of ulcerative colitis, is simple, we diagnose by what is called as colonoscopy. Then we take biopsy and prove that this is ulcerative colitis. For ulcerative colitis, there are very good medicines. Through medicines it can be treated. Nowadays injections are available. So these injections are given once in 2 weeks. What we call it as infliximab or adalimumab. These are the new injections that area available for ulcerative colitis, especially it is used for severe problems and surgery for ulcerative colitis has become less and less because of these new medicines that is infliximab or adalimumab. Now the surgery chances are becoming less and less. Now cancer, there is a small risk of cancer, especially when it is not properly treated and when the entire colon is with ulcerative colitis. That is why we ask all our patients to undergo colonoscopy every 3 -5 years just to be sure that they are not developing these problems.
