My Best Brother made every pole a winning one stretching his speed 1 1/8-miles over the turf in the $300,000 Del Mar Derby (Grade II). After finishing as the runner-up when getting nosed out in the La Jolla Handicap (Grade II) going a furlong shorter on August 11, the 3-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic was able to hold on by just under a length as the 6-to-1 fourth choice.
It was the fifth Del Mar Derby win for trainer Julio Canani, who won the race for the first time in 1988, and said afterwards that he would "play it by ear" regarding a potential start in the Breeders' Cup for My Best Brother.
The top two betting choices rounded out the trifecta with 5-to-2 favorite Howe Great settling for second and 7-to-2 second choice Brother Francis closing to finish third.
My Best Brother has now won half of his eight career starts and pushed his earnings over $340,000.
