Changing your own hood shocks is a great and easy way to get started on DIY, or "Do It Yourself" projects. It should take you less than 30 minutes to do both shocks on the hood, and you can save over a hundred dollars from what a shop might charge. The only thing you really need to worry about is if both of the shocks are worn you will need to have a friend hold the hood up or brace the hood in the up position with a sturdy piece of wood. The hood is surprisingly heavy and you do not want it falling on you when you are working.

Begin by raising the hood to the full up and locked, or service position.

On the left or drivers side hood shock near the bottom of the shock is a red button. Take some weight off the shock and press this button in, raise the hood all the way up and the button will lock the shock in the full upright or service position.

With the hood braced take a small flathead screwdriver and gently pry out the clip around the base of the shock. You do not need to remove the clip from the shock, just pry it out a little.

With the clip moved away from the shock housing you can push the shock off the mounting ball.

Perform the same procedure on the top of the shock.

If you live in an all weather climate you may want to clean and lubricate the mounting ball.

When installing the new shock you do not need to pry the clip out, you can simple pull the mounting cup over the ball and the shock will snap in place.

Move to the other side and replace the right side shock. The right side shock does not have a button to lock it in the service position.

Congratulations, you are done!
