The mill whistle usually goes off at 8 AM & 4 PM to signify break or shift change. It use to go off at 7:45 AM, 8 AM, 12 PM & 4 PM & 8 PM. This whistle at approx 2:30 AM signified an emergency. It could mean someone is missing somewhere in the Bay Of Islands or a fire in the mill. Its mostly use for mill fires now. Since its a paper mill, it happens and they have to catch it quick. They have all items in the mill to put it out themselves, but the fire department is still needed on hand to check its all clear. This doesn't happen often. Maybe 3 or 4 times a year. And the fire department is a 1 minute drive fro the mill, so we've avoided disaster for years. Several years ago, the city decided we no longer needed the mill whistle, but its been a part of the Bay Of Islands for so many years, people missed the sound and it was reinstated for 2 times during the day and for emergency. Corner Brook is like a bowl with a spout that leads out to the bay, so when the whistle goes off, it echos off all the surrounding hills & mountains making it sound like its more than one whistle going off and kind of eerie. Also, during the winter, i guess with the snow as a sound buffer, it sounds very different. How well you hear it also depends on the way the wind is blowing.
This is someone elses video much closer to the mill and at the 4 o'clock mark!
