What a project…I learned so much, far more than I had anticipated.
I also ran into so many data dead ends when researching this video (more than any). Unfortunately, most of the “odds” out there are just completely wrong (part of why I made this)…so I would like to thank all the people that helped me with this video:
Kevin – for making, and lending the marbles…(“DanesiGlass” is the Etsy store)
DQYDJ (“don’t quit your day job.com”) – for helping with the height data…you were incredibly gracious
Hockey Canada – Youth hockey data
NFHS – American youth sports participation data
The FA, Cam Appel – English youth sports participation data
Ethan Schoen – NBA positional height data
A few years back…I was thinking of 10,000 men in a gym – how many of them would be 6’10”? How about 6’7”? We often think about the odds of making it in basketball as an aggregate…but, clearly, it’s different for those that were blessed with height.
What else might we find if we look deeper into the data?
It turns out, more than I had anticipated…
A couple notes on height data…many countries do have good data on this. Since height is a normal distribution, we can look at it for the US using CDC data (pre-Covid…before it wasn’t self-reported…ran into that problem…lol). Everyone seems to overestimate their height – so keep in mind, when you look at an NBA roster, it’s inflated by about 2”…sometimes 3”. Fortunately, the NBA combine has barefoot height.
Hope you enjoy the video, and if you do, please subscribe! I would really appreciate it.
Thank you!
